CULTURAL ACTIVITIES YEAR-ROUND

Serampore Girls’ College takes pride in the fact that it organizes cultural activities, the year-round celebration of significant events giving each its due respect.
To start with we celebrate –

List of regular activities
EXHBITION OF ART AND CRAFT

This is organized on the day of Bhog of Saraswati Puja. Students of our college put up their hand-made art/craft that they prepared on their own which are explicit in showing their skills and dynamic talents. These handcrafts are judged by the teachers and students are being awarded on the same day. Our students excel in this CREATIVITY.

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA BIRTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Swami Vivekananda was born on 12th January 1863.He was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian Philosophies to the Western World and bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion during the late 19th Century and also contributed to the concept of Indian Nationalism as a tool of fight against the British Empire in Colonial India. He is perhaps best known for his speech which began with the words-“Sisters and Brothers of America..”.
Our College celebrates Swami Vivekananda’s Birth anniversary every year paying him homage in the month of January. Moreover, Serampore Girls’ College being essentially a women’s’ college, buildings are named after Swami Vivekananda because he believed ,”There is no hope for that family or country where there is no estimation of Women ,where they live in sadness. There is no chance for the welfare of the world unless the condition of the women is improved. It is not possible for a bird to fly on only one wing.”

MATRIBHASHA DIBAS (INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY)

Celebrated by the Bengali Department of Serampore Girls’ College is another important event to commemorate the sacrifice of the martyrs towards making ‘Bangla’ the official language of Bangladesh, rightly known as “SHAHID DIBASH”.
The department along with students and teachers pay homage to the memory of the martyrs through patriotic songs and poems and speeches that signify their pain, the bloodshed all for the cause of the “Mother Tongue”. This event is celebrated every year on 21st February.

BASANTO UTSAB

A colourful festival celebrated by the students in the month of March to mark the auspicious occasion of Holi (Doljatra).The students put up beautiful dance performances along with songs to entertain themselves and the teachers, thereby spreading love through ‘Colours’ (Abeer) making the ambience extremely vibrant and cheerful.

RABINDRA -NAJRUL JAYANTI

Rabindranath Tagore (7thMay,1861) and Kaji Najrul Islam (25th May, 1899). The birth anniversaries of both these important literary legends are celebrated as ‘Rabindra-Najrul Jayanti’ at our college. The students start the programme by garlanding their pictures / idols followed by cultural programmes. The event is celebrated in the month of July /August (BAISHE SRABON) , often showering respect, commemorating the death-anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.

ANNUAL PRIZE DISTRIBUTION AND CULTURAL PPROGRAMME

Serampore Girls’ College organizes Annual Prize distribution programme every year, usually in the month of August to acknowledge the dedication , determination of students that go into making ‘Academic Excellence’ . The prizes are handed over to the students for their results in the University Exams in an Academic Session.
Followed by prize distribution is the Annual Cultural Programme manifest with/by beautiful performances based on a particular theme, one such theme being “SWADESH”.

HINDI DIVAS

It is celebrated by the Hindi Department of our college, that falls on 14th September each year .The Departments puts up colourful performances by the students guided by the teachers. Songs, Dances and Recitations mark the celebration.

VIDYASAGAR SMRITI MALYADAAN

Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, born on 26th September, 1820 was an ardent advocate of Women education. Our college being Girls’ college, his contribution to Women’s’ education becomes all the most significant. Thus the students accompanied by teachers garland the ‘Vidyasagar Murti’ at our college and say a few words paying him earnest respect and acknowledge his noble deeds towards upliftment of women.

BHAGAT SINGH

born on 28th September, 1907 was the young revolutionary figure of India whose two acts of Dramatic Violence against the British in India and execution at age 23 made him a folk hero of the Indian Independence movement. Students and teachers of Serampore Girls’ College pay homage to Bhagat Singh with few words on his greatness on this particular day.

KHUDIRAM BOSE SMRITI CHARON

He was an Indian revolutionary, born on December 3, 1889 who opposed British rule of India. For his role in the Muzaffarpur Conspiracy case, along with Prafulla Chaki, he was sentenced to death and subsequently executed making him one of the youngest martyrs of the Indian Independence movement. Khudiram Bose is remembered on this day with lot of love and respect followed by malyadaan/garlanding his idol. His patriotism is thus lauded.

CULTURAL FESTIVAL

Students of our college organize Cultural Fest/ known as ‘SOCIALS’(organized by Students’ Union of Serampore Girls’ College) in the months of December/January .They show their gratitude to the teaching and non-teaching staff of Serampore Girls’ College by calling them upon stage and felicitating each with Uttoriyo and badge. This is a regular practice of our college and follow this with cultural performances in the form of song, dance, recitation which is further followed by ‘BAND’ music. Performers from cultural/musical field are invited each year to entertain the audience.

INTER/INTRA COLLEGE CULTURAL COMPETITION

Last but not the least, Our College/Institution has been practicing this event each and every year, (often under the banner of NSS)as part of co-curricular activities that forms an integral part of Serampore Girls’ College. Each year, students of other colleges along with our host college take active interest in show casing their inherent talents and capabilities with lot of enthusiasm and dedication thereby winning the appreciation of judges, teachers and fellow students as audience. The competition has different categories like-

  1. Creative dance/ Classical dance
  2. Rabindra Sangeet/ Najrul Sangeet
  3. Recitation
  4. Drawing/Painting/Art and the handcrafts
At the end of the competition, the winners in each category are declared and prizes /awards are handed over to them by the Principal ma’am and the teachers.

Besides these regular cultural activities there are academic /educational programmes in the form of Seminars and workshops resulting in all round development of Serampore Girls’ College.
