History

Serampore  is a town  of West Bengal which has a great historical importance as It is a pre-colonial city on  bank of the Hooghly River. During 1755-1845 , Denmark ruled over this town. The college is situated in this town where girls from all over the Hooghly district take admission due to its location advantage.

Serampore Girls’ College,  a distinguished women's college in the field of Higher Education for girls in Hooghly district of West Bengal, was established in an  ancient building of Danish Period on 6th June in the year 1981 by a group of visionaries who stood for the propagation of female education in the sub-division  and ultimately acted to fulfil   the  long standing demand of the people of serampore sub-division for a college exclusive for girls.

The noted educationist and the then President of West Bengal Higher Secondary Council late Smt. Anila Devi  inaugurated the college.

Affiliated to the University of Calcutta, this govt.-aided college was originally started with only 47 of students on its roll and with only seven general subjects in humanities group - Bengali, Sanskrit, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Education__ as Optional and Pass Papers in B.A. General Programme that were later extended to Honours level.

In 1983 the first batch of students was sent for their Graduation Examination

Honours programme in Computer Science and Geographyl  were introduced in 2004-05, In the same year generic electic subjects(then general subjects) -Mathematics, Computer Science,  Electronics, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany  and Geography were introduced. Sociology as general subject was introduced in 2005.

A significant percentage of population of surrounding area are Hindi and Urdu speaking community and they are willing to send their wards only to girls’ college for higher education . To cater higher education to such girls Hindi and Urdu as general subjects were introduced in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Dept. of Music and Economics were established in 2016  and that of Physical Education was established in 2017.

Today, Serampore Girls’ college has an average of 1800-2100 students on its roll per year, 54 faculty members, 9 Undergraduate Honours and 12 exclusively Undergraduate Pass Courses (later called General, and now Generic Elective) besides various  Certificate Courses. All teaching and non-teaching staff  are deeply committed in their service for holistic developments of the girls.

At the time of inception there was no own land for the college. Now college is running with two   own campus areas separated by a narrow municipal lane.

The students from all categories of population mainly from poor and middle income class families come to college travelling a long distance from remote places  of Hooghly district  following its high repute of  excellent  academic ambience .
