About the Department

Serampore Girls’ College affiliate to the University of Calcutta and recognized by the UGC was established in the year 1981 to fulfill its goal of performing female education in Hooghly district. Probably  keeping  the  remark of the great linguist T. Burrow in mind "The whole Science  of linguistics have come into existence as a result The founder of stimulus provided  by the discovery  of Sanskrit" ,the founder members  of this college  introduced  Sanskrit  as a pass subject of study from the very beginning.  
               In the year 1996 Sanskrit Honours Course was first introduced to the college. As the outlook of the coming generation of student regarding Sanskrit (a Dead Language) is changing and they are gradually being attracted by the eternal value of the language. The vast Vedic Literature and the scriptures of ancient India were written in Sanskrit. So, to know about the ancient India the knowledge of this language is very essential. This rich and metrical language of ancient India is the mother of all Modern Indian Language. The aim of the department is to make aware of the students about the actual status of it in the study of language. The almost aim of the department in teaching this language is to give healthy mental setup to the students, based on Indian values. 
                 As on today the department has a faculty strength of three (two full-time teachers, one state aided college teacher). All the teachers are highly qualified and well efficient in their respective field of specialization.
                 For the enrichment and all round development of the students various activities are taken by the department throughout the year: i) Continuous Internal Assessment ii) Students Seminar on course related topics iii) Quiz Contest on course related matter iv) Excursion V) Faculty Exchange Programme, vi) Extension Lecture vii) Add on Course on ‘Translation studies’ viii)  Workshop on spoken sanskrit series  ix) Teacher-student-guardian meeting are often arranged to make aware of the guardians about the class performance of the respective students.
