HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of History of Serampore Girls' College started functioning from June 1981 offering only B.A. pass course in History. From 1996-1997 B.A. hons course has been started. From 16 students in 1981, the department has now enrolled strength of 842 and it occupies a significant position in women education in Hooghly. One substantive post in history was created in 23.04.1981 and second post was created in 05.09.1984. At present the department is managed by three full time and one SACT teacher. 

OBJECTIVE OF THE DEPARTMENT

The department of History has got a unique opportunity to reach higher education in the subject to female students of the surrounding rural and semi-urban areas of Hooghly district. Serampore has a glorious history of spreading female education by Baptist missionaries. The department of History follows the same tradition of imparting quality education to the students. The objective of the department of History are

1. To act as an agent of spreading women education in the area.

2. Growth and development of a historical sense and a critical mind among the students of the department and also,

3. Advancement of learning which is also the objective of the mother university. 

The department believes in E.H.Carr's words that, "To enable man to understand the society of the past and to increase his mastery over the society of present is the dual function of history.) The department looks forward to achieving these goals.

**The department is facilitated with ICT-enabled classroom along with a sound system.
