About

About the Department

       Being initiated in 1998, the Department of Geography experiences a steep growth and presently has faculty strength of 5 members and student strength of about 220. Our department is located in the 3rd floor of the Vivekananda Building of College.  We envision that the department will continue to build its reputation as one of the leading undergraduate geography programs under the University of Calcutta, West Bengal, India. The department has many Topographical Maps, Landuse Maps, Thematic Maps, Weather Maps, Mouza Maps, Remote Satellite  Images, Aerial Photographs, Planning series Maps, 3D Maps, Admiral Charts, and Informative Maps. The department is well-equipped with a computer and internet access, GIS software, an overhead and LCD projector, mapping and surveying tools, a GPS device, models, weather equipment, and a sizable collection of rock specimens and well decorated soil lab. The college library contains a large selection of journals, atlases, magazines, encyclopedias, and books on geography. The Department of Geography is always open to those who are interested in carrying out reference work with regard to maps and books. For students enrolled in various semesters, the Department of Geography often hosts seminars, conferences, mobile displays, and orientation training. The students are taken on field trips and excursions to various locations throughout India, and they are encouraged to take part in intercollegiate quizzes, seminars, competitions for presentations, exhibitions, etc. They have been bringing laurels to the college consistently. Every year students of Geography participate actively and prepare Maps, Models, Charts, and Presentations on contemporary themes for the Geography exhibition. Department has competent faculty members to support Surveying,  Computer Mapping, Data analysis, Applications of Cartographic Techniques, Planning and Research Project Guidance and Providing Guidance for entrance exams like PGCUET, IIPS entrance test, others university entrance test for their higher education.

Student Profile of the Department

The majority of the students accepted to this college come from rural areas where there are communities of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people. They typically hail from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. However, they frequently display indicators of a respectable performance.

Changes in Courses

The most recent revision to the undergrad geography course outline was made in 2022–2023 in response to UGC recommendations. The Board of Studies that amended the syllabus was represented by the then-syllabus committee of University of Calcutta, West Bengal, India.

Learning Resources of the department

The department is equipped with the most up-to-date lab tools, a seminar library, and computers as teaching and learning resources for our students.

Library

Department of Geography, Serampore Girls’ College has a departmental library and a central library for undergraduate students. Throughout the academic year, a sufficient number of books on various geographies are heavily circulated in both of these libraries.

Laboratory

Theodolite, Dumpy-level, Prismatic Compass, Clinometer, Abny Level, Digital Thermometer, Hygrometer, Barometer, Tracing Tables, Topo sheets, Satellite imageries, Soil Kit and Soil Sieve with shaker, various rocks and minerals specimens, etc. are all available in the large laboratory for UG students.

Other Resources

The department contains an extensive library of study materials, including maps, models, charts, and atlases, as well as modern classrooms with projectors and internet access.

University Practical Exam Centre

From the session of 2015-2016 Hons our department conducts university Practical Exams as a nodal centre.

Research Project

Dr. Asraful Alam is one of the Project Director of collaborative short term major project on “Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana: An Impact Assessment in Relation to the Life of Women in Assam and West Bengal” sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Ministry of Education, New Delhi (Amount ₹ 16 Lakh/ 1.6 million).

Collaboration with other departments and institutions

A faculty exchange programme is run each semester with Malda College, Malda. Dr Asraful Alam works in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, Gauhati University, Guwahati, Assam, Aliah University, Kolkata, University of North Bengal, Darjeeling, Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University, Cooch Behar, Central University of Karnataka, Karnataka, and Central University of Bihar, Bihar. Mrs. Tania Kar is doing her research works with Sardar Patel University, Madhya Pradesh. Mrs. Moumita Kundu has also been working with Sardar Patel University, Madhya Pradesh, Diamond Harbour Women’s University, West Bengal and Shahid Matangini Hazra Government College for Women, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal and Priyanka Dey has also been working with University of Kalyani, West Bengal.
