Serampore Girls’ College was established on 6th June 1981, affiliated to Calcutta University and recognized by U.G.C. From the very beginning of the College the subject Education was included in Humanities stream as General Course. The Education Department started with a few students in General Course. But as the days go on, the Education Subject becomes more popular and number of students increases steadily in the subject. Considering the popularity of the subject and success rate of the students, Education Honours Course was introduced in the year of 1995. It is one of the subjects, primarily to get approval for honours Course in Serampore Girls’ College. Success rate of Education Honours Course students in Comparison to Calcutta University result is highly satisfactory. Main motto of the Education department is to spread women education to develop human qualities, skill and values among poor girl students for adopting the social change. Because, ‘education is the process involving continuous reconstruction and reorganization of experiences’ (John Dewey).

Following activities are being performed by the department of education every year:

Orientation Class,, Student Seminar, Extension Lecture, Intra-College Faculty Exchange, Lecture by Eminent Person, Counselling Session, E-Magazine &Wall Magazine, Study Tour, Parent Teacher Meeting, Fresher’s Welcome & Farewell Party, Quiz, Special Achievement etc.

Now Education is visualized as an evolutionary force so that each individual is enabled to evolve from purely material consciousness towards superior planes of intellectual and spiritual consciousness. Education is also perceived as a bridge between the past, present, and the future and as a means by which the best of the heritage is transmitted to the new generations for its further progression. Students must get a good grounding in the socio economic political realities of India and outside, if they are to relate to the Indian reality that oppresses the majority of Indians. Being educated is one of the important pre-requisite for the national development. Students educate the community and help to overcome some basic problems faced by them in their daily life. Awareness of Legal Rights, Human Rights Education, Child Rights, Women Rights, Minority Rights, Civic Rights & Responsibilities, Constitutional Rights etc. are very much essential to the general students. In the present context, there is a great deal of learning and educating about moral values. Education without moral values is considered as incomplete education. Higher educational institutions like College, University have become the most important means of transforming resource of knowledge and skills from one generation to another. However, the role of institutions becomes more challenging in the present world with various innovations and ICT developments. Nowadays, Investment in education and educational institutions should be viewed as an investment for economic prosperity.
