Description

The first academic session featured Prof. Ashis Sarkar, former Head of the Department of Geography, Presidency University, Kolkata, who gave an in-depth presentation on the purpose and framework of the new practical syllabus. He discussed the relevance of field-based learning and project work in developing analytical thinking among students. This was followed by an enlightening lecture from Prof. Lakshminarayan Satpati, Professor of Geography and Director, UGC HRDC at the University of Calcutta, on the basic tools and techniques for Geography practicals at the HS level. He emphasized the pedagogical significance of hands-on exercises in map work, weather chart interpretation, and field observations. On Day 2 (9th April 2025), the workshop focused on hands-on training sessions and practical demonstrations.

Objective

Teachers were introduced to key modules such as topographical map interpretation, weather data analysis, use of statistical tools, field survey methodology, and project preparation techniques. Resource persons guided participants through real-time problem-solving tasks, model exercises, and evaluation frameworks as per the updated curriculum. Teachers were given printed materials, sample formats, and worksheets to help them implement standardized practices in their own classrooms. The second day also featured interactive sessions where participants discussed institutional challenges, classroom implementation issues, and shared best practices with peers and facilitators.

 

Outcome

he workshop concluded with a valedictory session, during which participants expressed their appreciation for the clarity, academic depth, and practical utility of the sessions. Certificates of participation were distributed, and feedback collected from attendees indicated a strong sense of satisfaction and confidence in applying the knowledge gained. The two-day workshop proved to be a highly successful and timely initiative that significantly empowered the Geography teaching community of Hooghly district. It not only deepened their understanding of the revised syllabus but also provided them with the pedagogical tools and academic resources necessary to effectively deliver practical Geography education at the Higher Secondary level.
